Field Safety Rules

Safety First

IMPORTANT: PLEASE NOTE

These rules are set forth to insure the safety of spectators, modelers, and property. In the interest of safety for all, it is suggested that an observer assist you when several aircraft are in the air at one time. Safe flying is no accident and it takes two people, the flyer and the spotter, to fly safely.

The field safety officer or any full Club member shall have the authority to enforce the rules herein. In most cases a simple warning will remedy a situation. However, if a flyer deliberately refuses to comply with a specific safety rule, the safety officer or Club member may file a grievance per the procedures listed in the Club By-Laws.

Model flying must be in accordance with the AMA Safety Code and with these rules in order for AMA Liability Protection to apply.

  1. AMA membership is required of all flyers. AMA card must accompany the pilot.

  1. All flying is to be done in accordance with the official AMA Safety Code in the "Academy of Model Aeronautics Membership Manual" (See Safety Code, Insurance).

  1. Guest Flying: A total of three (3) visits is the limit for a guest pilot. The guest pilot cannot be a previous year member. A member may have a max of one guest at one time. A Club member must accompany all guests. Any Guest pilot must have an AMA card, and must be in good standing with Koast Air Modeling Society.

  1. Special accommodations can be made for out of town Guests visiting a Club member.

  1. Frequency Sharing: When others are flying on your frequency, observe the golden rule; one flight then relinquishes the frequency to another flyer (Maximum time limit approximately 20 minutes overall)

  1. Frequency Identification: An "Aircraft Only" red flag on your channel numbers must be on your transmitter and visible at all times (27 and 53 MHz still use the colored flag system). Your Club membership card must be on the Frequency Control board to turn on your transmitter. All of these are required in order to turn on your transmitter.

  1. Alcoholic beverages: No pilot or helper may fly within 6 hrs. of consuming any alcoholic beverage.

  1. No alcoholic beverages are permitted in the pits or on the flight line at anytime.

  1. A maximum of five (5) aircraft will be permitted in the air at one time.

  1. No engine operation before 9:00 a.m.

  1. During periods of field maintenance and of grass mowing operations, the field is closed when indicated by a sign on the Frequency Control board. No flying will be permitted at that time.

  1. Children must be closely supervised at all times. No children allowed on the flight line or in the pits unless accompanied by their parents.

  1. Animals must be restrained.

  1. Failure to comply with the Club safety rules may result in the filing of a Grievance Form.

  1. Operators of Jet powered aircraft must have a fire extinguisher within 8-10 feet of the aircraft and in view of all flyers. An ABC type extinguisher is recommended.

  1. All aircraft will be restrained when starting, or running an engine, warn people to stay clear of the prop arc.

  1. Direct prop blast away from other aircraft and people.

  1. Perform initial turn after take-off away from the pit, spectators, and parking area. Thereafter, do not perform maneuvers, flights of any sort, or landing over the pit, spectators, or parking area.

  1. No flying, landing, or taking off between pilot's box/stations and edge of runway.

  1. Stand in the pilot's box/station area when flying.

  1. Do not take off or land toward the spectators or pit area.

  1. In the event of problems announce an emergency and attempt to fly away from the pits and spectators and land immediately.

  1. Do not go out on the runway unless absolutely necessary. At any such time give a loud verbal warning of your presence making sure you are not running out in front of an aircraft in motion. Stay only as long as necessary and announce verbally when you are clear of the runway.

  1. Do not start your taxi until you have checked to make sure the runway is clear and no one is making a landing approach. Take off should be performed from the center of the runway to the right or left, depending on the wind direction. This is to prevent taking off and inadvertently flying into/over the pilot’s box/stations. All flying, except touch and goes, will be done on the far side of the runway.

  1. High-speed low passes over the runway are not allowed.

  1. Loudly and clearly announce your intention of landing or taking off.

  1. The flyer of a "dead stick" model, or a model experiencing problems, shall loudly and clearly warn other persons of the situation. Landing priority will be given immediately.

  1. Frequency Control: Club membership AMA card is necessary to fly at Ludlow Field. No AMA card, NO FLY!

  1. Careless, reckless, and/or dangerous flying as determined by any two or more Club members shall not be permitted. Please do not hesitate to express your concerns to fellow pilots regarding their flying style if it bothers you.

  1. Do not taxi in pit area.

  1. Running engines or pitting in the pavilion is strictly prohibited.

  1. Membership cards should be removed from the active channel area when you turn off your transmitter.

  1. A specified area will be used as a Helicopter hover only area. Frequency Control board must be strictly adhered to.

  1. Use of this RC field is limited to RC Aircraft only.

  1. The last person to leave the field is responsible for closing and locking the gate.
